NSO Presents National Arts Centre Orchestra with Shallaway Youth Choir
On Thursday, April 27, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra will present the concert event of the season, as the National Arts Centre Orchestra comes to town, under the direction of Alexander Shelley.
The concert, which also features internationally renowned Grammy and Juno award winning Canadian violinist James Ehnes and Newfoundland and Labrador’s own Shallaway Youth Choir, under the direction of Kellie Walsh promises to be a great evening of world class performances.
“2017 is an incredible year for Canada and for all Canadians,” said Music Director Alexander Shelley. “What better way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation than by putting together a line-up of concerts and education events featuring the best artists and musicians Canada has to offer, and bringing it right to the doorsteps of Canadians all across the country.”
Repertoire for the evening will feature classical masterworks, Eric Korngold’s Violin Concerto, as well as I Lost My Talk, a new work by Alberta composer John Estacio. The work is based on the poem of the same name by Mi’kmaw poet and elder Rita Joe, C.M., about her experience at Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia.
“We are so excited to be working with NACO and our presenter, the NSO for this event,” said Kellie Walsh, Artistic Director of Shallaway. “Partnering with Canada’s national orchestra during Canada’s 150th Anniversary year, is both an honour and a privilege, and our audience is in for a program of classical and modern music which truly expresses what it means to be Canadian.”
As the event falls during provincial Volunteer Week, the NSO is also partnering with the Community Sector Council to offer volunteers complimentary tickets to the event. Tickets for this special offer are limited and more information is available through the Community Sector Council.
