Bio

Originally from Hamilton, ON, Emily has held the position of Principal Horn of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra since 2014. Emily is active in the music community in St. John’s, having performed with Opera on the Avalon, Atlantic Light Theatre, and various chamber and jazz ensembles. Prior to her move to St. John’s, Emily was an active freelance musician in the Toronto area, Montreal, and Ottawa. She performed with the Hamilton Philharmonic, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Trois Rivieres, and Broadway productions of Mary Poppins, Wicked, Billy Elliot, Phantom of the Opera, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Evita.

Emily completed her Bachelor of Performance in Horn at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL under Gail Williams (Chicago Chamber Musicians, Grand Teton Music Festival, formerly Associate Principal Horn of the Chicago Symphony), and William Barnewitz (former Principal Horn of the Milwaukee Symphony). She completed her Artist Diploma in Orchestral Studies in Toronto, ON at The Glenn Gould School under Christopher Gongos (Associate Principal Horn, Toronto Symphony Orchestra). Emily also completed a Masters in Performance and Pedagogy at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. She both teaches horn lessons privately and teaches music in the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District.

Who inspired you to learn how to play?

More of a what – Movie scores like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, listening to Mahler Symphonies with my dad.

If you could pick one artist to collaborate with, who would it be?

Jacob Collier and/or Snarky Puppy

What’s your favourite piece of classical/orchestral music?

Pines of Rome, Mahler Four Last Songs, all Beethoven and Brahms symphonies, Star Wars Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. I also love chamber music by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Louise Farrenc.

What other non-musical creative outlets do you have?

I love to knit and crochet, draw and paint. I have a growing interest in gardening, although I still have more of a black thumb than a green one. I also love exploring the East Coast Trail and parks and trails in St. John’s with my husband Andrew and our sons Henry and Owen.
