Masterworks 1

7:30 PM | ST. JOHN’S, ARTS AND CULTURE CENTRE | 09.25.2026
CONCERT DETAILS

Featuring
Simon Rivard, conductor
Charles Richard-Hamelin, piano

On the Program
Bela Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3 – 23 minutes
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” (reduction by Erwin Stein) – 50 minutes

The night opens with Bela Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a work of striking contrast and luminous
beauty. This late masterpiece balances clarity and intensity, brought vividly to life by our guest
artist, an acclaimed pianist, Charles Richard-Hamelin.

The journey continues with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” presented in Erwin Stein’s
compelling reduction. Mahler’s epic vision unfolds as a sweeping story of youth, struggle, irony,
and exultation, music that grows, transforms, and ultimately overwhelms.

“And this is where, despite illustrious precedents, Charles Richard-Hamelin arouses admiration. There’s not a contrast that isn’t mastered, not a refinement that isn’t precious.”
