Get ready to reflect, and swoon as the Recital Series ends with a night of wonderful music for string trio!
Recital 4 begins with Franz Schubert’s Trio for violin, viola, and cello in B-flat major, D.471 (1816) – a charming, largely single-movement work . It embodies Classical style, often reflecting a cheerful, lyrical nature. Next, enjoy Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio for violin, viola, and cello in G major, Op. 9, No. 1 (1797-8). This is the first of a set of three trios that the composer reportedly considered his finest works up to that point. The set served as a sophisticated testing ground for Beethoven’s skills in large-scale instrumental form.
The concert concludes with Trio for violin, viola, and cello in A major (1926) by Jean Cras. This work, often considered a masterpiece of the genre, is a blend of Breton folk inspiration, nautical influences, and mature harmonic language and is frequently performed and recorded.
