The concert begins with Philip Glass’s String Quartet no. 2 ‘Company’, a minimalist masterpiece known for its repetitive structures and mesmerizing, meditative quality. Glass’s unique style creates a sonic landscape that is both hypnotic and evocative.
Next, experience the world premiere of a new commission by acclaimed Canadian composer Alice Ho. Known for her innovative and expressive compositions, Ho’s new work promises to bring fresh and exciting sounds to the string quartet repertoire. “Threnody of the Skies” is a new composition commemorating the Arrow Air Flight 1285R tragedy in 1985. 2025 is the 40th anniversary of the disaster in Gander, NL which was the deadliest plane crash in Canada aviation history. The piece pays tribute to those who lost their lives, and offers hope for the future for friends and family who have been affected by this event.
The evening concludes with Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet no. 2 in a minor, op. 13. This romantic quartet, inspired by Beethoven, is rich with lyrical melodies and intricate counterpoint. Its emotional depth and passionate intensity make it a favorite among chamber music enthusiasts.
