The evening opens with Pēteris Vasks’s Grāmata Čellam, featuring solo cellist Nathan Cook,
followed by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata No. 4, where choir and strings bring a sense of
solemn ritual and expressive depth. For the Cantata we also welcome Yukichi Hattori, dance who will
present beautiful world premiere choreography.

Lera Auerbach’s Sogno di Stabat Mater adds a contemporary meditation on the Stabat Mater
tradition through solo violin and viola featuring our own Heather Kao, violin and Kate Read, viola,
creating an intimate, searching sound world. Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 44 “Trauer”
follows, its restrained drama and darker tone offering one of Haydn’s most inward symphonic statements.

The program closes with another work by Vasks, Musica serena, a piece that turns toward calm,
sustained sonorities and a sense of stillness. Yukichi returns once more to interpret this piece through
dance. Together, these works shape an evening focused less on spectacle and more on contemplation,
texture, and emotional resonance.
