Composer and Music History Slideshow Lessons

Created in 2019-2020, the Symphony Goes to School… And Beyond! program offers a series of slideshow presentations outlining the lives and history of prolific classical composers including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and more! Included with these resources centred on composers are presentations briefly outlining the history of the symphonic orchestra and opera. Presentations are offered in both English and French. Composition Unit Lesson Plans

A collection of full unit lesson plans created to explore music composition at varying grade levels. With 8-10 lessons prepared in each unit, this resource proves to be extremely useful to music educators when teaching concepts of music without physical instruments. Each unit lesson plan is complete with worksheets, slideshows, and details on how each lesson connects to the provincial curriculum outcomes.

Journey through the NSO

The Symphony Goes to School… and Beyond! education and outreach program provides an interactive online hub for learners to explore the history and function of the orchestra. Through this online exploration and inquiry, students learn the parts, history, and purpose of the orchestra while testing their knowledge throughout the process. Click here to learn more!

Instrument Families and Demonstration Videos

This extensive video series is not only a perfect introduction to the orchestra, but provides in-depth demonstrations of each instrument by the NSO orchestra members. Body Percussion And Boomwhacker Videos

This series of play-along videos are easily paired with both boomwhackers and body percussion. With popular themes from the classical music repertoire such as the “Goin’ Home” theme from Dvorak’s 9th Symphony and “Hallelujah” Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, learners will be engaged in playing classical music in a way that is accessible and enjoyable. Listening Activities

This collection of listening activities offered in both English and French offers learners an opportunity to practice active listening, identifying musical concepts by ear, and auditory reflection. Students will engage in a wide breadth of standard repertoire in classical music with the prolific compositions of composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, and more! Each activity comes with guiding questions, prompts, musical scavenger hunts, and lessons that challenge students to open their ears to classical music.
