Music Monday is one of the world’s largest single events dedicated to raising awareness for music education. Each year, on the first Monday in May, hundreds of thousands of students, educators, and music makers participate in a simultaneous nationwide concert performance of an original song written by a Canadian artist.
This past season, as a pilot project, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with the Music Coalition of Canada, the Newfoundland English School District and the Rooms hosted a celebration concert to shine a spotlight on the phenomenal work of music educators and advocates across our country. Our event represented Newfoundland and Labrador’s official participation as on that day there were regional celebrations in many provinces and territories. This concert featured performances by members of the NSO’s ASQ, Saltwater Strings, Paige Penney and Holy Heart Low Notes. Robert Colbourne (Music Specialist at Holy Heart) worked with the school audience to create a very special performance of the Music Monday Anthem, Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom” as a massed choir. The 125 member audience was comprised of students from Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School, St. Teresa’s Elementary School and Bishop Abraham Elementary School who rehearsed the anthem in preparation for this celebration. As this event was livestreamed by the Newfoundland English School District, students from all over participated in this phenomenal concert. What a wonderful and special day it was to have all those voices join together in one massed ensemble!
