Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Valerie Hewson has been playing musical instruments and singing since she was a small child. She studied violin with Christina Smith and Jennifer Johnson, as well as guitar and piano with her sister, Jean Hewson. Valerie has been teaching with the Suzuki Talent Education Program (STEP) for six years – a program she had grown up in starting at age 5. For the past 2 years she has taken on the role of Artistic Director for STEP, fostering the program’s musical growth and development.
Valerie has a BSc in Psychology from Memorial University, and uses this along with her Suzuki training to nurture her students: encouraging them to believe that playing music is an experience for the mind, body and soul.
