Education & Outreach

Education and Outreach is a large part of the NSO’s vision. The Education and Outreach program is a diverse, comprehensive program which brings NSO musicians into schools and community programs, in person and virtually, as well as bringing schools and community groups to concerts and other activities with the NSO. As part of the education piece, the NSO creates learning resources for educators to use. All of our learning resources, including our extensive library of NSO arrangements, listening activities, PowerPoint presentations, activity sheets, videos, audio, accompaniment recordings and curriculum outcome documents are available for free! Resources are matched to NL Department of Education Music Curriculum outcomes.

School Outreach Activities

The Chevron Symphony Goes to School…and Beyond education and outreach program is a diverse, comprehensive program which brings NSO musicians into schools as well as bringing schools and community groups to concerts and other activities with the NSO.

School Visits: NSO musicians and our conductor visit schools to introduce students to the world of classical music.

CDLI Distance Education Sessions: Working with Memorial University, NSO musicians offer digital learning sessions using distance learning technology.

Play-In/Sing-In: The Play-in/Sing-In Jam Session brings over 500 students together to play and sing a chosen selection with members of the NSO based on rep from the current season.

Prelude Concerts: Schools, community groups and individuals have the opportunity to perform at Prelude shows prior to NSO concerts.

School Group Rates: School groups and community music groups can purchase tickets for NSO concerts at a special group discount.

Programs at The Rooms: The NSO has worked with The Rooms to design music education modules which are included as part of the Learning Programs at The Rooms and the Open Minds Program.

Library Outreach Program: The NSO has partnered with the NL Public Library to virtually introduce and demonstrate various musical instruments that community members can borrow and check out from the Public Library Musical Instrument Lending program.

Youth Ambassador Program: NSO Youth Ambassadors attend NSO concerts and events act as a focal point for meeting young people, guest artists and NSO musicians during concerts. The Ambassadors usually write a blog on their experiences.

Each year we reach out to a local school to find a student or two with an interest in music to become the NSO Youth Ambassador for the season.

Our Youth Ambassador attends all four Masterworks concerts and writes a blog about their experience. The Youth Ambassador also meets with youth in our audience on the ACC upper concourse during intermission to discuss the concert with them. Be sure to check this page often for the NSO’s Youth Ambassador’s blogs throughout the season.

If you would like your school to participate in any of these activities, please email Jennifer Brennan at jb@nsomusic.ca

    Community Outreach

The NSO is committed to supporting our local community and bringing our music out to a diverse range of groups and locations.

Sensory Friendly Concert: An NSO annual concert with a specialized atmosphere catering to differently-abled individuals and those with neurodiversities.

Visits to Seniors Homes: The Atlantic String Quartet gives a series of short performances at seniors’ homes each season.

Partnership with The Gathering Place: The NSO gives back to the community by collecting service items at concerts all season long which are then presented to The Gathering Place. The partnership also provides free concert tickets to clients of The Gathering Place. Click this link https://kindnesswanted.ca/ for more information.

Orchestra Concert Outreach Program: The NSO provides long term care facilities both public and private and community organizations across the province free access to our digital concert series. This program, which began in fall 2020,  was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It serves to connect NL communities with the NSO and its virtual musical offerings thus providing much needed enjoyment and comfort during this period of isolation and uncertainty and will continue as part of our regular community outreach programming.

Public Library Outreach Program: The NSO has partnered with the NL Public Libraries to offer free storytelling sessions set to music for families, youth and community members. This is a great way to hear a story being read while set to beautiful music and hear a wonderful performance by our very own NSO musicians.

Citizenship Ceremonies: Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir members volunteer to spend time performing ‘O Canada’ and other selections at local Citizenship Ceremonies.

Access for New Canadians (CANOO): The NSO partners with The Institute for Canadian Citizenship to offer free concert tickets to new Canadians through the new CANOO app https://www.inclusion.ca/program/canoo/
